"When
I paint I think about the differences of various
things. Difference is about the degree of individuality
of a color, a surface, a sense of light or space.
Through differences I see the character of a bowl
or a tree. It also intrigues me how things can
co-exist while being very different.
I
also prefer to understate rather than overstate.
When forms are painted as if they have been just
made, barely recognizable as things, there is
much beauty in the moment of their birth. Although
I work from observation of real things, I try
to paint the sense of presence of them rather
than their appearances."
