"Obscure,
private visions that alienate the mind in daylight,
keep a potent mooring within me while painting
perceptually indoors. Inspired by what the mind
conjures, the process of perception is influenced
by contemplation. Shadows, objects and shapes
are gateways to memories. What we see is truly
imagined; our imaginings mingle with our perceptions.
In dreaming before the rooms I paint, I come in
contact with the transient aspects of myself.
Literally and symbolically, interior spaces are
self-controlled and apart from the world. Rooms
are states of being; manifestations of the mind;
protected and shielded. The interior is a metaphor
for the self.
Depth of meaning is united with active search
through a back and forth process of direct observation
and separation. Through the culmination of many
painting sessions under changing conditions, paintings
are built up piece by piece, exploring alternate
descriptions in search for a response that feels
right. It is through this search that variety
in mark and paint application can be developed
in order to surpass the objects as symbols."
