JILL D'ANGELO
My jewelry is created by combining traditional techniques with modern designs and materials. I get inspiration from the world around me and use bead weaving and stringing techniques that have been around for hundreds of years to turn that inspiration into jewelry.
Many of the peyote stitch patterns I use come from stain glass windows, Native American textiles, and woven baskets. No matter what the inspiration is, my designs are changing constantly. I alter the patterns by changing the finish or color of the Japanese glass delica beads I use for my peyote stitch. Using beads that are lined or plated in 24kt gold, rhodium and palladium, and mixing them with different colors gives me an infinite number of changes to any one pattern.
While my peyote beadwork is precise and symmetrical, the pearl and stone cuffs are much more sculptural in nature. Using sterling and gold-filled wire, with natural stones and pearls, no two cuffs ever turn out the same. I weave the wire and beads together to form a dense, solid bracelet that can be formed to fit individual wrists.
Whether I am working on a peyote piece or a stone cuff, it’s really all about the beads. I love the idea of taking a pile of beads, wire or threads, and turning them into a beautiful piece of jewelry.
