KIM FERREIRA

“Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.”

                                                          - Oscar Wilde

"My series of self-portraits is a response to the many depictions of saints by the old masters. My introduction to all of these religious figures was through the paintings of Raphael, Gentileschi, Mantegna, Zurbaran and Perugino (to name a few). Unaware of their roles in history, I was deeply moved by their images. Those paintings, painted hundreds of years ago, express an incredible range of human emotions, including humor.

I am currently working on a new body of work inspired by the Tulip Mania - a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed. Speculators amassed huge wealth and then - poof - fortunes vanished overnight... sound familiar?"
