"In
the process of painting, I have tried to achieve
a sense of compositional unity through repetition,
interesting three-dimensional spaces, and flat
areas of bright color. I often stumble upon things
in the construction of a painting that open up
new ideas. The working process leads me to the
final content through a series of mistakes and
informed decisions.
I have always been interested in human interaction;
in the spoken and unspoken ways people communicate
with each other through body language and gesture.
The figure in the interior is a way for me to
give the viewer a somewhat voyeuristic look into
the figure’s anxiety, urgency, or obliviousness
to tension. The people in my paintings are twenty-something’s
that are either in the throes of domesticity or
in some kind of a groove outside commonplace experience.
In my paintings, the state of the interior is
a mirror for the emotional states of the figures.
Hopefully, the accumulation of objects, hallucinatory
color, and the illusion of light will allow for
a more complete understanding of the people in
the paintings. I want my viewers to have a sense
of being “in” the painting and to
feel the disorientation of suddenly finding themselves
in a new place.
Painting for me is about realizing how complex
human behavior is without being able to completely
express it. The act of painting is an attempt
to communicate things that cannot be said simply."
