Sarah
Burns, a.k.a. Sweet Fern Pottery, works with stoneware
fired in a gas-fired soda kiln. The soda ash introduced
into the kiln reacts with the surface texture,
glazes, and slips on her pieces. The soda ash
dances around the kiln and creates an irregular,
unpredictable effect on each piece. The variability
in airflow, temperature, and soda ash ensures
that each piece is unique.
Sarah's forms are influenced by the organic, ever
changing world around us. Like nature, her work
is constantly evolving. Much like planting a garden
or watching the rebirth of the forest every spring,
she patiently looks for the growth and opportunity
in her own work.
Sarah received her B.A. in Studio Art from the
University of New Hampshire in 1998. In addition
to being a studio potter, she has taught at Philips
Exeter Academy, Kimball-Jenkins Community Art
School and Exeter Center for Creative Arts (ECCA).
She is a participating memeber of the League of
New Hampshire Craftsmen, the NH Potter's Guild
and a board member of North Country Studio Workshops.
