Maggie Stern...

I have always been compelled to create. My ideas dictate the form I use.

For much of my life I wrote children’s books, but for the past several years I have been working in papier-mâché, wire, fabric, thread, and roving wool.

One current series is titled “The Hankie Stories.” Last spring I came across a stack of handkerchiefs that I had inherited. I washed them and began to sew. I had never sewed anything but a hem in my life, but I felt compelled to sew—free form-- what I saw in my head. Each handkerchief had belonged to someone. Each had a story to tell.

In another series, raw clumps of wool are turning into portraits of relatives and people from history whom I know or admire. Even a keen observer may not recognize the felted portraits, because I create them as I see them, not necessarily the way they look to others.

Most recently, I’ve been stitching a world of birds and owls titled “Flights of Fancy.” As in all my work, I create from what suddenly appears to me. The birds, some large (20” by 20”) and some tiny (2” by 2”), are stitched with silk thread.

Each bird stands on its own, but is also part of a flock.
