Through
my early work with soft sculpture composed primarily
of hand-dyed wool, I immediately realized that
I closely identified with the material. Experimentation
with oil paint on this unusual medium has lead
directly to the work I produce today. Nearly ten
years of refining the process has resulted in
a texturally unique body of art in both form and
content.
By utilizing
the depth provided in the wool's natural topography,
I create an atmosphere for the subject matter
that helps me convey a sense of its touch and
its feel. For each piece, I attempt to invoke
the “second skin” sensation one gets
from a wool sweater, blanket or gloves.
The combination
of images and textures comes from an instinctive
and personal place, producing a statement of what
I see and feel. Whether painting on coarse material
such as wool or by attaching soft sculptural elements
to a canvas I attempt to create a tactile translation
of a deliberate thought or idea.
